Tailor Your Resume from the Job Posting

Many resume professionals will tell job seekers that it is imperative to individually tailor your resume and cover letter to each application, and this absolutely is the case. This helps convey your true interest and degree of fit to the employer, and it shows you are paying attention to the details.

One way to figure out what you should be paying attention to in the job posting is to decipher which words or industry terminology is used frequently in the job posting. If the employer keeps making mention of certain points in the posting, then you should focus on those skills or requirements in your resume and cover letter.

A tool that you can use to find those frequently used words is Wordle. You can copy the job posting and paste it into the "Create Your Own" box at Wordle, and it will generate a word diagram where the words used more frequently will show up as larger text in the word diagram. This will give you an idea of what the employer is focusing on. It is a great resource for tailoring your application materials.

Take care,
Chris
